TraeCode is ByteDance's AI coding IDE, derived from VS Code, offering an IDE mode for hands-on work and a SOLO mode in which an agent plans, writes, tests and previews code. It bundles models from several vendors (GPT, Gemini, Kimi, DeepSeek, GLM, MiniMax, ByteDance Seed) and accepts custom models via API keys. Paid plans moved to dollar-denominated usage allowances in 2026. Chat content may be used for training unless the user turns on Privacy mode.

Permission model

Command execution modes are documented, including an 'Auto-Run' mode the docs warn 'bypasses all security checks'. A sandbox with file/network allow/deny controls exists but must be enabled in settings (not on by default). MCP servers need explicit first-time authorization; agent file deletions go to the Recycle Bin/Trash. source

Data access scope

Agent has broad workspace access by default; scoped file/network access only when the optional sandbox is enabled (sandbox.json readWrite/readOnly lists). Codebase indexing temporarily uploads files to compute embeddings. Documented in Sandbox and Privacy mode docs. source

Data storage

Chats and indexing run through ByteDance cloud services; docs say plaintext code uploaded for indexing is deleted after embeddings are computed (a review notes embeddings and metadata are retained). No documented region or deletion controls for individual plans found. Enterprise page claims code is never stored on servers. source

Data retention & training

Chat interactions, related code snippets and AI outputs 'may be used for analytics, product improvement, and model training' unless the user enables Privacy mode (opt-out; only effective while logged in). Codebase files are not used for training. Retention period not found in docs; privacy policy page did not render for fetch. Enterprise advertises zero retention and no training. source

Incident history (24 months)

July 2025: an independent analysis (HN front page, covered by The Register) found Trae kept sending telemetry after the in-app telemetry switch was turned off; ByteDance said that switch only governs VS Code framework telemetry and changed the setting wording. The Register reported the broader channels were not disabled. Current resolution status not verified; grade D is defensible if treated as unresolved. July 2026 changelog notes 'fixed known security issues' without detail. No CVEs found. source

The TRAE Enterprise page states 'SOC 2 Type 2 certified', but no report, trust portal or auditor reference was found (www.trae.ai/trust and /trust-center returned no content). Graded as a claim without published evidence; upgrade to A if the lead accepts the vendor statement. source
